下面基本上对wiki的进行了一下翻译
地理位置点，存储经纬度坐标。同时，可以height=*标示物体所海拔；layer=* 和 level=*，可以标示物体所在的地图层面与所在建筑物内的层数；place=* and name=*来表示对象的名称
是有序列表nodes，表示一个折线，如果它们形成闭合环的话就是一个多边形。用来表示线性特征比如街道和河流，也能表示区域比如森林、公园、停车场和湖。通过2-2000个点（nodes）构成了way,对于超过2000 nodes的way，可以通过分割来处理。
是有序列表nodes，ways和relations(合起来称为members成员)组成的，每一个成员可以选择拥有一个role角色(一个字符串)，相互的关系通过role来定义。关系用来表示已经存在的nodes和ways之间的关系。Examples include turn restrictions on roads, routes that span several existing ways (for instance, a long-distance motorway), and areas with

是key-value键值对，标签不是地图基本元素，但是各元素都通过tag来记录数据信息，存储关于地图objects的metadata元数据，比如类型，名字和物理属性。标签不是独立的，但是总是附加到object上的：node,way和relation。
在将osm数据导入PostGIS以后，能发布到GeoServer上的有4个表。参见的Making

有两个不同的表包含线数据：planet_osm_line and planet_osm_roads
planet_osm_line：包括铁路，地铁和其他线性信息。
planet_osm_roads：只是包含道路信息。
line包含的数据要比roads多。
planet_osm_point：包含地铁站，购物中心，大学等等。
planet_osm_polygon：包含但不局限于公园，水体，甚至在某些城市地区建筑物
