八戒性格温和,憨厚单纯,力气大,嘴巴甜.但好吃懒做,爱占小便宜,贪图女色,经常被妖怪的美色所迷惑,难分敌我.猪八戒贪吃贪睡,自私自利,好进谗言.他常常想捉弄人,但不是搬起石头来砸自己的脚就是作茧自缚.为什么连这样一个人也最终修成正果,被如来佛封为“净坛使者”.这与猪八戒的知错就改,能听取领导和同事的意见有重要联系（其实这与悟空的‘督促’有很大关系）,做到了悬崖勒马、甚至是浪子回头.在取经事业中的他对师兄的话还算得上言听计从,对师父忠心耿耿,总算是为西天取经立下汗马功劳,才有净坛使者的美好结果吧.《西游记》是具有浓郁象征意味的神魔小说的代表作,而猪八戒则是作者吴承恩在这部作品中着力塑造的一个喜剧典型.在他的身上既有人地吃苦耐劳、憨厚率直的品质以及贪婪自私的本性,又有神的本领,同时还有猪的形体特征,这充分体现了作者把人性、神性、猪性地完美结合.唐僧是一个很复杂的人物,又善良但又不分青红皂白.诚心向佛、顽固执着,举止文雅、性情和善,佛经造诣极高.他嫉恶如仇,不怕困难,坚忍不拔,英勇无畏,但有时过于顽劣,不守纪律,我行我素. 唐僧心地善良,虔诚取经,当大唐急需用人时,他挺身而出.
举例：当乌鸡国国王给他托梦,讲述了自己的不幸遭遇,他就大发恻隐之心,让们去营救,帮他解除苦难,再重回到人间.他见了老鼠变的女人,就派徒弟们去营救.当他打坐时,一只小虫从身上爬过,他都不忍心伤害.唐僧取经的意志极为坚定,他不以色乱,人蝎子精百般诱惑,但唐僧还是不以理会,表现出他一心向佛,意志坚定,只以取经为己任.当弟子们以取经路上有妖魔鬼怪、性命难保进行劝阻是,唐僧意志坚定,立夏誓言,决心取回真经.但唐僧经常错怪悟空,常常善恶不辩,当悟空大肆六个拦路抢劫的强盗时,唐僧就百般埋怨,谴责孙悟空,时常不分青红皂白地念紧箍咒.白骨精变成老人、女孩时,唐僧轻信老头的话,不相信悟空.孙悟空将他们打倒,唐僧听信猪八戒的话,不明辨是非,仍念紧箍咒.唐僧胆小如鼠,在蛇盘山,白马被小白龙吞下,他就痛哭流涕,不知所措.当宝林寺主持不让他们住宿时,他只会抹着眼泪出来.他听完乌鸡国国王被推入井中,就吓的毛骨悚然.
