As a young teenager, my art buddies and I hitched a ride to our nearest metropolis to watch Princess Mononoke at a &select theater.&
We had only dimly heard of this supposedly great film, and it was just a pretext to get out of the house and away from our parents.
Little did I know that I would go on to watch Princess Mononoke around ten times within the next five years&and this was before the days of DVDs&and would become one of the top reasons why I decided to pursue art and writing for a living.
Next year, my first nationally published illustrated novel hits the shelf in August.
At the heart of it all, seventeen years ago when I decided to overcome all the future obstacles, Hayao Miyazaki and his treasure trove of inspiration stand there for me to thank.

One of the single most important (hand animation) artists of the 20th century. His style has influenced millions of people and brought great happiness to millions more. Hayao Miazaki's style is legendary. Anyone who has watched Totoro as a child can fully appreciate his work.&
When I see negative comments towards Hayao's work, I bet they (commenters) have never taken the time to see how many (1000's of hours) of work are needed to create these masterpieces.&

I visited the office of Animage magazine in 1988 as part of a special animation tour. They would always highlight Miyazaki's work and at that time, I was given a Totoro plush doll and got to see the first 20 minutes of the film.

While I love his animation and the majority of his movies, I can honestly say that Spirited Away never made sense to me. I've watched it three times. It just seems disjointed to me. My favorite Miyazaki movie is My Neighbor Totoro (The Fox version with the English dub). Cannot stand the Disney dub of it. I have Porco Rosso sitting on the entertainment center. I've never seen it and I'm going to watch it this week!

Porco Rosso is amazing. I've watched it probably ten times.
The first three quarters of the film are transcendent, and it comes in with a strong, A+ finish.
I've noticed that even in the art community&and I'm an artist, by the way&there seems to be a divide in the people who &get& Spirited Away, and there are some who don't. When asked, one of my talented art buddies said of the film, &It's just two hours of weird [crap] floatin' around on screen.&
I don't understand the root cause of the difference is. For some reason, some of us emote well to fairy tale worlds where things make sense for no other reason that the author says they ought to&for instance, the magical mirror in Beauty and the Beast. And for other people, it's not enough of an explanation. Neither way of thinki both have their merits. And I would imagine both types of people are coming to stories for similar questions at the heart of their search for fulfillment.
Maybe someday you'll come back to Spirited Away and it will make more sense, and maybe one day I'll come back to it and be disillusioned! :)

The difference is cultural IMO. Spirited Away is very Asian (and I mean Asian as in the whole Asian continent) and many in the west will not appreciate its fantasy nature, children may even find it frightening at times.

Those 2 kids were supposed to be dead from the middle of the story. They don't have shadows while others do. And that's why they can see Totoro which is a spirit that only dead people can see
and their mother couldn't see them when the kids delivered the corns to her.
